‘Free DC’: Washington Spirit fans channel activism pitchside

I interviewed the National Women’s Soccer League commissioner, Washington Spirit players and a dozen women’s soccer fans for this feature on a grassroots movement sprouting in stadiums nationwide. In addition to writing, I took photos and produced a video that became the most popular post on the @medilldc Instagram with more than 6,000 views within a week.

Many ordinary scorelines contain stories that are anything but. In this postgame piece, I explored why U.S. Women’s National Team head coach Emma Hayes relishes 1-0 matches as her side prepares for the 2027 Women’s World Cup.

Men’s Basketball: Northwestern shoots over 50% from three in 94-73 win over Penn State

The angle behind this gamer — one of many filed from the arena’s media room minutes after the postgame presser — came from understanding what Northwestern’s men’s basketball team had lacked all season: success from beyond the paint.

Women’s Basketball: Joe McKeown era ends with tight loss to Purdue

A winter of reporting on Northwestern’s women’s basketball team culminated in covering head coach Joe McKeown’s swan song. The game was analogous to McKeown’s 18-year NU career. Despite ending in heartbreak, it injected fans with hope down to its final moments.
